Donald and Rosemary (Becker) Redmond
Donald Morris Redmond (1921–2012) and Rosemary (Becker) Redmond (1930–1980) built a life rooted in family, service, and deep commitment to the Sycamore community. Don was born in Montana and raised in Minnesota, where he developed a lifelong love of athletics and service. After earning his Civil Aeronautical Airplane and Engine license, he served in the United States Army during World War II as a single-engine fighter pilot and instructor. Following the war, he built a 38-year career in the telephone industry, eventually settling in Sycamore in 1959. Rosemary stood beside him as they established their home, raised their adopted children, and became active members of the community.
Rosemary devoted herself to her family and to Sycamore High School, where she served as treasurer for 10 years. She was known for her steady dedication and quiet commitment to supporting students and school activities. Together, Don and Rosemary became involved in numerous civic and service organizations, including the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, NIU Husky Club, and St. Mary’s Church. They valued connection, generosity, and active participation in the life of their community.
Following Rosemary’s passing in 1980, a scholarship was established through Sycamore High School in 1981 in memory of her 10 years of dedicated service as treasurer of Sycamore High School. The scholarship is awarded to a Sycamore High School graduate in honor of Don and Rosemary Redmond and reflects their longstanding commitment to education, service, and the Sycamore community.
After Donald’s passing in 2012, memorial contributions helped establish the endowed Donald & Rosemary Redmond Memorial Scholarship Fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation in 2013. Through this lasting Fund, their shared legacy of generosity, community involvement, and support for local students continues to make a meaningful difference in Sycamore.
