Harold and Wilma Wells

Dr. Harold P. Wells (1921–1996) believed deeply in the power of education to change lives. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana, where he earned advanced degrees in physical education, he dedicated his career to teaching and mentoring students in the United States and abroad. Throughout his life, he remained committed to helping others pursue learning and personal growth. DeKalb became home for more than a third of his life, and he valued the community he served.

Wilma C. Wells (1929–2019) shared Harold’s commitment to family, education, and community. A devoted wife and mother, she created a home centered on encouragement, support, and opportunity for her children. She stood proudly behind her family’s academic and athletic pursuits and carried forward the values she and Harold shared.

Following Harold’s passing in 1996, Wilma established a Scholarship Fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation to honor his lifelong dedication to education. The Fund reflects their shared belief in giving back and investing in others.

Today, the Dr. & Mrs. Harold P. Wells Scholarship Fund supports members of the DeKalb Fire Department and their families as they pursue further education. Through this lasting gift, Harold and Wilma’s legacy continues to strengthen the community they called home.
