Janan E. Rieff
Janan E. Rieff (1926–2020) devoted her life to education, leadership, and service. Born in Chicago, she pursued advanced degrees in physical education, earning her bachelor’s from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, her master’s from Marquette University, and her doctorate from Illinois State University. She spent more than three decades teaching at Northern Illinois University, where she also became the first coach of the NIU women’s golf team. Her dedication to students and to her profession earned her numerous honors, including recognition for her 25 years of service and induction into the department’s Wall of PRIDE.
Beyond the classroom, Janan was deeply involved in the DeKalb community. She volunteered with the Elwood House Museum, the Newman Catholic Student Center, the American Red Cross, Kishwaukee Community Hospital, and Oak Crest DeKalb Area Retirement Center. She believed strongly in giving back and remained active in service well into retirement, leaving a wide circle of friends and colleagues who admired her commitment and humor.
Through her estate, Janan provided a meaningful gift to the DeKalb County Community Foundation. Her generosity to the DeKalb County Community Endowment Fund reflected her lifelong belief in community support.
Her legacy continues through the impact of her charitable giving, honoring a life dedicated to learning, mentorship, and strengthening the DeKalb community.
