Ralph and Bertha Joiner

Ralph M. Joiner (1914–2008) and Bertha A. (Cain) Joiner (1917–2011) shared a remarkable life rooted in service, faith, and deep devotion to DeKalb County. Both graduates of Sycamore High School, they married in 1935 and spent 73 years building a life together in the community they loved. Ralph served as DeKalb County Clerk from 1954 until his retirement in 1975, following in the footsteps of his father. Bertha worked alongside him, assisting with county records and supporting his work with dedication and care.

During their years at the courthouse, Ralph and Bertha developed a keen awareness of the historical value of the county’s public records. Rather than allowing important documents to be discarded, they intentionally marked boxes “save,” recognizing their significance for future generations. Ralph envisioned a permanent home where DeKalb County’s history could be preserved and shared.

That vision became reality in 1989 with the establishment of the Joiner History Room, named in their honor to recognize their commitment to preserving the county’s historical documents. The archives later expanded and eventually became a permanent part of the DeKalb County History Center in Sycamore, continuing the work they championed decades earlier.

The Joiner History Room Endowment Fund at the DeKalb County Community Foundation was established in 2008 and has since received memorial gifts honoring both Ralph and Bertha. Through this Fund, their dedication to preserving local history continues to support the stewardship of DeKalb County’s records and stories for generations to come.
