Steven Thomas Yates
Steven Yates (1947–2023) valued history, craftsmanship, and the close-knit spirit of the Kirkland community. A veteran of the United States Air Force, he enjoyed woodworking, trains, local history, and the outdoors, and remained active in organizations dedicated to preserving local heritage. Friends and family remembered him for his quiet nature, steady presence, and appreciation for family traditions and community connections.
Following Steven’s passing, the DeKalb County Community Foundation received an unrestricted estate gift from the Steven Yates estate. In partnership with Steven’s sister, Jean Klock, and in honor of their mother’s lifelong dedication to teaching, a portion of the gift was used to establish the Shirley Lorenz Yates Scholarship Fund. The scholarship supports Hiawatha High School graduates pursuing careers in education, continuing the Yates family’s lasting commitment to learning and the Kirkland community.
